מחקר מהווה את אחד מעמודי התווך של עבודתו המקצועית של ד"ר רועי סמואל.
תפיסת עולמו נשענת על מודל ה-Scientist-Practitioner , שלפיו ידע מדעי איכותי צריך להנחות את העבודה היישומית, בעוד שהאתגרים העולים מן השטח מהווים בסיס לפיתוח מחקרים חדשים וליצירת ידע בעל ערך יישומי. גישה זו מאפשרת לחבר באופן מתמשך בין מחקר, הערכה ועשייה מקצועית, מתוך מטרה לשפר ביצועים, לקדם רווחה נפשית ולסייע בקבלת החלטות מבוססת נתונים.
במסגרת עבודתו האקדמית, ד"ר סמואל הינו מרצה בכיר וראש חטיבת הספורט, הביצוע והמאמץ בתוכנית לתואר השני בפסיכולוגיה חברתית בבית הספר ע"ש ברוך איבצ'ר לפסיכולוגיה באוניברסיטת רייכמן. לצד פעילותו האקדמית, הוא מלווה לאורך שנים ספורטאים, מאמנים, שופטי ספורט וארגוני ספורט, מתוך שאיפה לחבר בין המחקר המדעי לבין העשייה המקצועית בשטח.
תחומי המחקר המרכזיים שלו כוללים הסתגלות לשינוי (Adaptation), קריירות ספורט ותקופות מעבר, פיתוח מומחיות ומצוינות, תמיכה פסיכולוגית בספורטאים לאורך הקריירה, קבלת החלטות תחת לחץ, פסיכולוגיה של שיפוט ספורט, תהליכי שינוי והתערבות פסיכולוגית, וכן היבטים פסיכולוגיים של פעילות גופנית, בריאות ורווחה נפשית.
עבור ד"ר סמואל, מחקר איננו מטרה בפני עצמה, אלא כלי להבנת המציאות, לקבלת החלטות מושכלות ולפיתוח תהליכי מצוינות המבוססים על נתונים, הערכה ולמידה מתמשכת.
מחקריו פורסמו בכתבי העת הבינלאומיים המובילים בפסיכולוגיה של הספורט, הביצוע והפעילות הגופנית. עד היום פרסם למעלה מ־60 מאמרים ופרקים מדעיים שעברו שיפוט עמיתים (Peer Review) בעברית ובאנגלית, ומאמריו צוטטו כ־1,700 פעמים על פי Google Scholar. בנוסף, הוא משמש כמעריך וכעורך אורח במספר כתבי עת בינלאומיים, ובעבר כיהן כעורך משנה של International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology.
ד"ר סמואל מרצה ומציג באופן קבוע בכנסים מדעיים בינלאומיים, ובהם FEPSAC ו-ISSP, ומרצה עבור גופי הספורט המובילים בישראל, בהם הוועד האולימפי בישראל, אתנה, התאחדות אילת, ההתאחדות לכדורגל בישראל, איגוד השופטים, מכון וינגייט, מרכז עוצמה, התאחדות הספורט לבתי הספר ורשת אורט.
ארגוני ספורט וביצוע נדרשים כיום לקבל החלטות מורכבות בסביבה משתנה ותחרותית. החלטות אלה נוגעות לפיתוח ספורטאים, הכשרת מאמנים, קידום תוכניות לאומיות, ניהול משאבים, רווחת עובדים, יעילות ארגונית והערכת הצלחתן של התערבויות מקצועיות. קבלת החלטות המבוססת על נתונים, מחקר והערכה מאפשרת לארגון לזהות חוזקות, לאתר אתגרים, למדוד תהליכים ולשפר את איכות קבלת ההחלטות לאורך זמן.
ד"ר סמואל מציע שירותי מחקר והערכה המותאמים לצורכיהם של ארגוני ספורט, גופי ביצוע, מוסדות חינוך וארגונים נוספים המעוניינים לבסס את פעילותם על ידע אמפירי וכלי הערכה מדעיים.
תהליך העבודה מתחיל בהגדרת מטרות המחקר או ההערכה, הבנת צרכי הארגון וגיבוש שאלות המחקר המרכזיות. לאחר מכן נבנית תוכנית עבודה מותאמת, הכוללת בחירת מתודולוגיה מתאימה, פיתוח כלי מדידה במידת הצורך, איסוף נתונים, ניתוח סטטיסטי או איכותני, הפקת תובנות יישומיות וכתיבת דוח מקצועי הכולל המלצות אופרטיביות להמשך הדרך.
מעבר לביצוע המחקר עצמו, מושם דגש על תרגום הממצאים לשפה יישומית המאפשרת לארגון לקבל החלטות מושכלות, לשפר תהליכי עבודה, לקדם מצוינות מקצועית ולהעריך באופן שיטתי את השפעתן של תוכניות והתערבויות לאורך זמן.
כל תהליך מחקר והערכה מבוסס על עקרונות של Evidence-Based Practice, המשלבים ידע מדעי עדכני, מתודולוגיה מחקרית, ניסיון יישומי והיכרות מעמיקה עם עולם הספורט והביצוע. המטרה היא לספק לארגון תובנות אמינות, מדויקות ובעלות ערך יישומי, שיתרמו לקבלת החלטות, לפיתוח תהליכים וליצירת שינוי משמעותי, מדיד ובר־קיימא.
